Food processing industry is one of the leading sector in a processing industry in Green Croatia Region, which with a shares of companies of 2,84%, employes 16,8% of employees and per year provides 15 % of total income of the Region.
The meaning of a food processing industry affirms also a data about a share of the export of food processing industry in the Region from 20,2% of total export, while on the national level the share of the food processing industry in export is 8,7%.
On the national level a food processing industry takes fourth place as a export economy branch, whereas on the level of Koprivnica-kriĹževci County is apsolutely biggest exporter and an engine of the economy development. In Bjelovarsko-bilogorska County is a bit smaller share of a food processing industry, but nothing less important as a potential sector for investments with respect to potential business partners.
The most profitable activities in food and beverage industry are milk and cheese production and processing, production and processing of meat, beer production, preservation of fruit and vegetables and production of mineral water and refreshments.
Food processing industry as leading processing industry in the region has implemented in her business activities all kinds of international standards. The most representative standard is the ISO 9001:2000, then the HACCP system, IFS and NSF, BSF and HALAL standard.
In this activity is present few internationally known companies – Podravka, Carlsberg Croatia, Koestlin and the strongest brand in the region is coming right from the food processing industry – Podravka Vegeta.
World's interest for the mediterranean gastronomy and the healtier diet in general are Croatian touristic advantages and also the chance for the «invisible export» of homemade articles, what represents at the same time the big potential for the placement of the food processing products of the Region.
Food processing industry has a special meaning for the economic determination of the Region, as well as for the future development of this area. The connection between food processing industry and agriculture in encompassed unit of production makes it depended on the volume and quality of the raw material for the agricultural production, but in the same time it encourages, beams and fosters that connection.
